Stairway To Success

I'm a big fan of running hills to improve conditioning and mental toughness. I also wanted to add stairs to the list as well. This weekend the TFT crew got in a tough conditioning session on some steep stairs I happened to stumble upon while driving around looking for another playground to workout at.

Running stairs has been around forever and has kind of been "forgotten" by many people (including me!!). I remember running stairs in high school for track and that got me in unbelievable condition. It burns a ton of calories and really kills the legs!! Again, running stairs is tough, hard work but produces results! We were all sore (in a good way!) from the workout in which we carried medicine balls, wore a weight vest, or just used our body weight. We finished up with some bear crawls up the bleachers which works on conditioning as well as agility.

To achieve success, you need to keep pushing forward, one step at a time!!

My Better Is Better

Watched a youtube clip from Nike called "My better is better than your better!!"

If you want to reach your goals and be successful, you cannot get complacent or comfortable because someone out there is probably working just as hard or harder than you. Not that I am better, but I've always felt that everyone else is doing better or more than me!!! That's why I keep working hard and pushing to do a little more each day in fitness, business, and life. In my part of town, a lot of people are shocked and in awe of the type of training I do, and, I've made some great strength and conditioning gains, however, I know it's nothing compared to some of the stuff I see out there, like these BEASTS!!!

When I watch that, not only does it pump me up to train my a** off, but just let's me know not to get too comfortable, just keep putting in work! There's always going to be someone who's doing more and that's what keeps me focused to be "better"!

Here's my better for now, what's yours?

Thailand Bound!!

Wanted to congratulate Fitness Tech athlete Andres Salas for his muay thai victory Saturday night. Andres won by a 2nd rd TKO when his opponent could not make it out for the 3rd round. This victory extends his unbeaten streak to 6-0 AND qualifies him to fight in Thailand next month. The TFT crew is very proud of Andres for his hard work and dedication to the sport! It'll be a great experience to fight in Thailand, but equally important, to LEARN from a place where muay thai all started!!

I work with Andres 2-3 times per week over-seeing his strength and conditioning, so I'm only a small piece of the big picture. Much of his success has to go to his muay thai coaches, Mark Tabuso and Shingu Fighter (his coaches from Stockton). They've been great helping Andres prepare for battle and giving him the discipline he needs to be successful.

Only 20 years old, Andres hasn't even tapped his full potential yet!! With continued hard work and experience, the sky's the limit! Here's the full fight:

The Blame Game

Just finished listening to the audio cd of Think and Grow Rich and have now started on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (I also bought these books to read through). This is all about getting into the right mindset to succeed. Much of your success in attaining a fitness goal (or any goal for that matter) is dependent on your attitude and determination, not so much on any physical gifts, the perfect workout, or being lucky. I feel you make your own luck by working hard and always striving to improve.

In Covey's 7 Habits, I heard something that really struck a chord and just re-affirmed my belief that to be successful, it really comes down to the choices/decisions you make. Covey said, "Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions." So basically, it means YOU have total control over your decisions and choices, not the conditions and environment around you. I remember when I was training for basketball trying to make my college team, I would shoot baskets and get in my running when it was pouring rain!!! In the summer, I would workout in the hot sun when most would be at the beach or indoors with the ac on. The weather, or anything else for that matter was not going to stop me. I ended up making my college basketball team and, as I reflect on those times, I had that burning desire to succeed and having that mindset gave me that edge to achieve my goal.

How many times have you blamed your conditions for your failures? Maybe it's raining and you DECIDE to stay in. Or, maybe, you CHOOSE to go to happy hour after work with your friends instead of getting a workout in. Or maybe since everybody in your office is eating donuts, you give in to temptation and CHOOSE to have one......or two!! Another condition people love to blame is time. "I have no time, or I'm too busy".

It all comes down to your desire to achieve your goal. In other words, how much does that goal mean to you? If a goal is as important as you say it is, then you'll find a way to achieve it. You'll go to the gym or do a home workout if it's raining, you'll save the drinks with friends for the weekend and go workout, you'll resist the urge to indulge in that donut, and you'll go to sleep earlier and get up an hour earlier to have more time. There's that saying, "There are two certainties in life, death and taxes," well I can add one more, the power to CHOOSE, no one can take that away from you. It takes hard work, perseverance, and that burning desire to achieve your goal. You DECIDE, how bad do you want it??
